This Workshop Unique

Taku Nakano mastered the art of kintsugi entirely on his own—
without a teacher, without a school.
Through countless repairs, more than anyone could imagine,
his technique was refined.
And through that repetition, he simplified the process to its purest form—
so simple, it could not be imitated.
He calls this approach the Okunodoi Method.

Today, people from around the world come to learn this method—
a way of creating kintsugi that is both beautiful and accessible to all.

Overview｜概要
Enhance the spirit of wabi-sabi by dyeing
the natural crazing (fine cracks)
of pottery with vermilion lacquer before applying kintsugi.
This method reflects the Japanese view of life and
impermanence through beauty in imperfection.

貫入（器の細かな亀裂）を朱漆で染め、侘び寂の精神を加えることで、
金継ぎとの相乗効果を生み出します。
日本人の生命観を映す、侘び寂を体感できる金継ぎ技法です。

Highlights｜特徴
This workshop features original vessels handcrafted and fired by
Taku Nakano, with careful attention to clay and glaze.
Designed to help international guests intuitively experience
the spirit of wabi-sabi, the process avoids traditional brushwork.
Instead, participants gently polish the repaired surface
to reveal delicate golden lines and subtle brilliance.
With Nakano’s original urushi clay,
even beginners can easily highlight beautiful kintsugi lines.
All materials are 100% natural, using only pure gold and
natural urushi lacquer.
Finished pieces are safely packed in a custom protective box,
making them easy to carry—even while traveling.

このワークショップでは、中野拓が創作・焼成した特製の器を使用します。
土や釉薬にもこだわり、外国の方にも侘び寂の美意識が自然に伝わるよう設計されています。
筆は使わず、破断面をやさしく研ぐことで、繊細な金の線と輝きが浮かび上がります。
中野独自の漆粘土を使うことで、初心者でも簡単に美しい金継ぎ線を表現できます。
使用する素材はすべて天然で、純金と天然漆のみを使用。
完成した作品は、安全な専用ボックスに入れてお持ち帰りいただけるため、
旅行中の方にも安心です。

Additional Notes｜補足
Participants will wear traditional Japanese workwear (samue)
during the session.
Gloves, sleeves, and protective clothing are provided to
prevent skin contact with urushi.

Option B : Shikkokurai

Darkness Struck by Gold｜漆黒雷

Overview｜概要
This striking kintsugi experience captures the beauty of
contrast—jet-black lacquer illuminated by golden lightning.
Participants restore and reimagine broken vessels using
three to four fragments, creating bold and expressive designs that
emerge from the darkness.

漆黒の器に金の稲妻が浮かび上がるような、印象的な金継ぎ体験です。
3〜4片の破片を組み合わせながら、暗闇に光を描くように、
力強く美しい金継ぎのデザインを完成させます。

Highlights｜特徴
This workshop allows even beginners to work
with multiple fragments—something usually considered
difficult in traditional kintsugi.
Participants use original vessels crafted and fired by
Taku Nakano, with careful attention to clay and glaze.
Instead of using brushes, they gently polish the surface
to reveal delicate golden lines and subtle charm.
Nakano’s original urushi clay makes it easy to highlight
the kintsugi lines with elegance.
While a small amount of synthetic adhesive is used on the
underside for temporary support, all visible restoration
is done with 100% natural materials:
pure gold and natural urushi lacquer.
The finished piece is food-safe and packed in
a custom protective box, making it easy to take home—
even while traveling.

初心者には難しいとされる複数の破片を組み合わせる工程を、
誰でも体験できるように設計されたワークショップです。
中野拓が創作・焼成した特製の器を使用し、土や釉薬にもこだわっています。
筆を使わず、破断面をやさしく研ぐことで、
繊細な金の線とチャームが浮かび上がります。
中野独自の漆粘土を使えば、初心者でも簡単に美しい金継ぎ線を表現できます。
裏面の一部に仮止めとして科学接着剤を使用しますが、

Option C：Yobitsugi
Embracing Imperfection
with Contrast

Overview｜概要
In traditional kintsugi, damage is described in stages:
hairline cracks (nyū), chips (hotsu), breaks (ware),
missing pieces (kake), and finally,
yobitsugi—the most advanced form.
Yobitsugi involves joining a missing section
with a completely different fragment,
creating a new harmony from contrast.
This workshop makes that highest-level technique
accessible to all, allowing participants to celebrate imperfection
by combining mismatched pieces into a single, beautiful whole.

金継ぎには、ニュウ（ひび）、ホツ（欠け）、割れ、欠損、
そして最上位の呼び継ぎという段階があります。
呼び継ぎとは、欠けた部分にまったく異なる破片を“呼んで”
つなぎ合わせる技法で、不完全さの中に新たな美を見出すものです。
このワークショップでは、その呼び継ぎを誰でも簡単に体験できるよう工夫されており、
異なるデザインの破片を組み合わせることで、唯一無二の魅力を楽しめます。

Additional Notes｜補足
This workshop uses substitute lacquer and gold powder,
making it safe and accessible for all ages.
While the finished piece is for decorative use only
and not food-safe, the technique can be applied to
a wide range of items—such as
mug handles, vases, or containers—so long as
they do not come into contact with food.
There is no risk of urushi allergy,
making it ideal for those who wish to explore advanced
techniques with ease.

このワークショップでは、代用漆と代用金粉を使用しているため、
漆かぶれの心配がなく、どなたでも安心してご参加いただけます。
完成作品は観賞用で飲食には使用できませんが、
マグカップの取っ手や花入れ、小物入れなど、
食材に触れない部分であれば幅広く応用が可能です。

A mini plate bearing timeless patterns
born in the Edo era　江戸古紋豆皿

Overview｜概要
This is the most approachable kintsugi experience,
perfect for beginners and families.
Participants choose from five traditional Edo Komon patterns—
designs developed during the Edo period—and select
their preferred break pattern to restore.
Each motif carries a special meaning, such as wishes for
longevity, health, or a child’s growth.
The process is simple and safe, making it easy to continue
practicing at home.
This course is also a popular choice for souvenirs
and thoughtful gifts.

江戸時代に生まれた5種類の江戸小紋柄の器から、
お好きな割れ方を選び、金継ぎを体験します。
長寿祈願・健康祈願・子どもの成長・無病息災など、
それぞれの意匠に意味が込められており、
初心者やご家族にも安心して楽しめる内容です。
工程がとても簡単なので、ご自宅での再挑戦も容易。

Process & Materials｜工程と素材
The simplified process requires no brushwork.
Instead, participants gently polish the repaired surface
to reveal fine golden lines and subtle charm.
Using synthetic adhesive and alcohol-based materials,
the kintsugi lines are easily and beautifully highlighted.
The workshop uses affordable,
modern tableware and substitutelacquer and gold powder,
making it safe and accessible for all.
While the finished piece is for decorative use only
and not food-safe,the technique can be applied to
a wide range of non-food-contact items
such as mug handles, vases, or small containers.

筆を使わず、破断面をやさしく研ぐことで、繊細な金の線とチャームが浮かび上がります。
化学接着剤とアルコールを使用することで、誰でも簡単に美しい金継ぎ線を表現できます。
使用する器は、一般に市販されている手頃な現代の量産品。
代用漆と代用金粉を使うため、漆かぶれの心配もなく、どなたでも安心してご参加いただけます。
完成作品は観賞用で飲食には使用できませんが、マグカップの取っ手や花入れ、
小物入れなど、食材に触れない部分であれば幅広く応用可能です。

For solo participants, the fee is ¥11,000.
It is available for groups of 2 to 50 participants

1名のみで参加の場合は11000円。

Begin by selecting from a variety of Japanese-patterned plates, primarily featuring five traditional Edo Komon designs.	Observe the broken edges and consider how to create a beautiful and expressive line.
Prepare the base and explore how to draw lines that reflect the spirit of wabi-sabi.	Use sight, sound, and touch—three senses—to find the right combination.
Join the pieces using substitute lacquer, drawing lines that highlight the natural break.	Sprinkle substitute gold powder to bring out the golden accents.
Refine the lines for a beautiful finish.	The completed piece is for decorative use and can be taken home the same day in a protective case.

About the “Okunodoi Method”

Kintsugi has traditionally been cultivated using materials, tools, and techniques found in everyday life. In the case of ceramic artist Taku Nakano, he draws lines by designing with shadows, using clay and diamond tools, and engaging his physical senses—sight, touch, and hearing.

This approach stands apart from that of lacquer artists, who use materials such as wood dust, polishing powder, and fine brushes to paint the kintsugi lines. Nakano’s lines never overshadow the vessel; instead, they remain subtle and harmonious, embodying a natural expression of wabi-sabi—the beauty of imperfection and impermanence.

While traditional lacquer-based kintsugi typically takes around two months to complete, Nakano’s method can be finished in just a single day. This distinctive approach, combining original materials and techniques, is known as the “Okunodoi Method.”

おくのどいメソッドについて

金継ぎは古来より、身の回りにある材料や道具、手法を用いて培われてきました。陶芸家である中野拓の場合、陶土やダイヤモンドの道具を使い、視覚・触覚・聴覚といった身体の感覚を通して、陰影をデザインしながら線を描いていきます。
これは、漆芸家が木くずや砥の粉、細い筆などの材料を用いて金継ぎ線を描く手法とは一線を画しています。中野の金継ぎ線は器よりも前に出ることなく、より自然な侘び寂びを活かした、控えめでありながらも非常に自然で美しい表現が特徴です。
また、漆芸家による金継ぎが完成までにおよそ2か月を要するのに対し、中野のメソッドは最短で1日で仕上げることが可能です。
このように、独自の素材とアプローチを用いた中野の金継ぎ技法は、「おくのどいメソッド」と呼ばれています。
